A guest house is a room located in the owner’s house or in an annexed building.

For one or more nights, you will be welcomed as friends by the owners who have adapted their house (farm, Provencal farmhouse, manor house, castle etc.) with one or more bedrooms (5 maximum and 15 people hosted) with private sanitary facilities.  Take advantage of the breakfast included in the guest house: a real bed and breakfast, the French way!

Also included in the night rate, a generous breakfast will enable you to explore different local specialties.  Depending on your host’s favourite locations and inspiration, you will enjoy homemade jams, fresh farmhouse bread but also homemade pastries or cakes, cheeses and dairy products or local charcuterie.

From the beginning of your stay, you will enjoy a warm welcome with your host taking every care to help you prepare your visits in the region!

Some accommodation also include meals with the host (it is sometimes possible to opt for half board or full board); depending on the location, you will share a family or gourmet meal.

The Gîtes de France® quality label guarantees you precise standards of comfort (rated 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 stars) and compliance with a national charter.

All Gîtes de France® guest houses are classified based on the architectural quality of the house, their environment, their degree of comfort, the decor and their services, and are classified at least once every five years.  Whatever the classification, the owners will take care to ensure your stay is pleasant.

Tourist residences

A tourist residence is a set of ready-to-live-in accommodation equipped to receive a tourist clientele for a weekly or monthly accommodation.

Tourist residences also offer common services and facilities, but unlike hotels, you can stay there independently.

These residences also have the possibility to request a classification, categorised from 1 to 5 stars, which are awarded on the same basis as that of the hotels.

To keep the benefit of the stars, the accommodation is evaluated every 5 years.

All classified tourist residences must be registered with Atout France; a government institution.

Hotels

All hotels in France are registered with the prefecture to which they belong and which issues them a certificate of practice.

A hotel can only open in France upon presentation of a certificate of practice and an insurance certificate. This insurance certificate can be requested at the time of booking.

Hotels also have the possibility to ask for a classification, categorised from 1 to 5 stars.

Stars are awarded on the basis of the assessment of 3 main criteria:

  • the quality of comfort and the equipment,
  • the quality of the services offered in the establishments,
  • The good practices in terms of respect for the environment and the reception of customers with disabilities.

To keep the benefit of the stars, the accommodation is evaluated every 5 years.

The classification is voluntary: it is the operator who must apply to Atout France for the classification of his or her establishment.

All hotels must be registered with Atout France, a government institution.
